FEDER project Tribology Platform Engine: ICE-T
Led by IREIS, the ICE-T (Innovation Center for Engine Tribology) platform brings together a unique range of experimental resources in the field of tribometry.
The platform is dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of engines. This project is the result of a public–private partnership, involving: IREIS (HEF Group), the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, Saint-Étienne Métropole, École Centrale de Lyon, INSA Lyon, and the Jean Monnet University of Saint-Étienne.
The construction of the infrastructure, as well as part of the testing equipment, was co-funded by the FEDER (European Regional Development Fund) program and Saint-Étienne Métropole.

A platform designed for applied research
ICE-T studies the tribological behavior of engine components, whether thermal or electric.
To this end, the platform uses all necessary resources to test and characterize mechanical parts — from individual components to complete engines. It also adopts a multi-scale approach, enabling the analysis of systems at various levels of complexity and observation.
A bridge between research and industry
ICE-T directly connects laboratory research to concrete industrial validation needs. As such, it develops technical solutions that are ready for field implementation. In addition, the platform functions as a true hub for innovation, focused on the tribology of lubricated mechanical systems. It also regularly hosts collaborative projects in partnership with researchers and industry players. These partners work together either through joint research initiatives or service-based collaborations.

A shift towards low-carbon mobility
Originally, ICE-T focused on internal combustion engines. However, the platform quickly evolved to meet the challenges of the energy transition. It has since integrated new test benches specifically designed for low-carbon mobility systems. Today, it conducts tests on electric motors as well as hydrogen-powered combustion engines.
