IREIS’s commitment to the automotive industry
To support automotive manufacturers facing increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, IREIS develops eco-efficient industrial solutions aimed at reducing CO2 emissions per kilometer. We also offer innovative coatings and systems in the fields of optics and vehicle lightweighting. Additionally, we design and operate specialized test benches to evaluate the tribological performance of engine components and subsystems. Our tribometers cover a wide range of models, from the simulation of elementary contact pairs (ball/flat, ring/flat, etc.) to full-system testing under realistic conditions (e.g., cylinder heads).

Automotive
The technologies developed by IREIS find numerous applications in the automotive sector, one of its key markets.

DLC coatings: Reduce friction in rocker arms by 30%, resulting in a 1 g/km CO₂ reduction for a standard vehicle.

Ionic nitriding: Treatments of ferrous alloy parts to improve wear resistance. Approximately 95% of global vehicles benefit from this via the HEF group.

Innovative rearview mirror: Co-developed with Visiocorp, a plastic-injected rearview mirror that is lighter, more compact, and stylish, replacing traditional glass.

Other means of transport
IREIS’s expertise goes beyond the automotive sector. Drawing on its know-how in surface engineering, the company offers treatments adapted to a wide range of means of transport, from motorcycles to heavy-duty trucks. The design of axle/roller/cam systems in truck engines must be especially robust to ensure reliability. IREIS supports manufacturers by analyzing and advising on the various lubrication and friction regimes in the valvetrain system.

Racing / Competition
REIS designs a wide range of surface coatings specifically developed for automotive and motorcycle racing, with the goal of optimizing engine performance. These developments enhance our understanding of materials and processes, tested under extreme operating conditions in terms of mechanical strength and durability. Our solutions include PVD and PECVD coatings, renowned for their high wear resistance and low friction coefficients. These technologies are rigorously evaluated on tribological test benches to ensure their effectiveness under high-stress conditions. The coatings are particularly well-suited for critical components such as piston pins, injection plungers, and timing gears, where durability and performance are key. Our coatings are used in engines for Formula 1, NASCAR, WRC, WRX, MotoGP, and many other top-level racing disciplines.
